It's time to cut the cable con in the UK!
When you buy a TV from John Lewis, Currys, or countless other high street stores, you will be offered hideously expensive accessories such as HDMI cables. These cables are sold with absolutely ridiculous markups, many multiples of the actual cost of the items.

YES. Trust me that there is absolutely no difference!
You can't have a 'better picture display' on HDMI. It isn't sent down the cable as an analogue signal, where small changes will perturb the signal. But even if it were true, think for a second - most of your interference even on an analogue TV is from the aerial itself, not the cable that connects it to the TV!
As for the HDMI, it's digital. Even if somehow you lose a few bits along the cable during transmission, that is nothing.
Test for yourself - if you are about to buy a £100 HDMI cable just breathe a second... at least TRY the £4 cable first! See what you think yourself first. Heck, buy the Amazon Basics cable for £1 to give it a try!

Colours we more defined and the image was clearer. Others' experience may differ but for now, I'm happy with my purchase.

I don't doubt that's what you thought you observed. But if you're talking about an HDMI cable here... well... the placebo effect is a wondrous thing. Besides, who wants to admit that they were duped into paying more for something that is functionally identical to a product that's a fraction of the cost? I'd bloody well talk about "more defined" colors too if I were in that position!
Actual electrical engineering, on the other hand, disagrees with your conclusion.

You guys are spot on, well done. The 'cable con' has been a annoyance to me for many years and have told people of this con at every opportunity after currys trying to sell me a usb cable for a printer for £14.99 when I'd seen a perfectly adequate if not identical cable for sale elsewhere for £1.
I had no idea these stores were charging as much as £100 for an hdmi cable when as you say a cable costing a few pounds is as good. You probable get a bigger smile from the sales staff when you hand over £100 of your hard-earned, I wonder what they will be thinking?

I have to agree that the cost of a HDMI cable does not reflect in the better picture quality, the more expensive HDMI cables are simply using better shielding and better grade metals to conduct the electrical DIGITAL signal, this is for stability of the SIGNAL.
I'm an network engineer and the same principles apply, AWG 24 copper is used for networks the same cable you're using to connect your pc/laptop to your internet modem/router. The better quality metals and shielding the better stability of an internet connection. This does not mean a faster pc, all metals have a conductive length/distortion. The longer the cable the signal becomes weaker due to length of travel. This principle applies to professional installations of video equipment using HDMI. But since the debate is about home use, there is NO real difference from a £4 cable to a £100 cable as long as both meet the standards and requirements of your HDMI devices then dont be fooled into buying.
