Earlier this week Kogan UK launched a campaign to cut the cable con.
The response has been overwhelming - bloggers, tech pundits and shoppers from all around the UK have been thanking the Kogan team for making these big high street retailers accountable for their dodgy practice.
When we called out this scam going on at Currys and John Lewis, spokespeople from those companies responded:
John Lewis and Currys-parent DSGi denied the upselling claims, saying they helped customers buy the "right" cable.
"We sell a large range of HDMI cables with different specifications and prices tailored to our customers' needs," said a spokeswoman for DSGi's retail arm "It's not just about the quality of signal and image that HDMI cables can provide, particularly in higher-end televisions, it is also about the protection from interference and the long-time durability of the cables."
A spokeswoman for John Lewis echoed that response, saying the retailer offered a "wide range of options" with cable prices starting from £20 to £99. "We advise customers to consider purchasing an HDMI cable which matches the quality of their television's components," she added. "For instance, a cable suitable for a premium 3D TV would not be required for many of our mid-range TVs. We pride ourselves on offering excellent customer service, and will always aim to advise our customers to buy the product that is right for them.”

This appears to be massive hypocrisy by Currys and John Lewis and nothing more than a scam.
It’s time this practice ended, and we challenge Currys and John Lewis to set up two of their “Premium 3D TVs” - one with their £100 HDMI cable, the other with the Kogan £4 HDMI cable. Put them side by side and let their own spokespeople try and pick which one uses which cable. We know there’s no chance they’ll be able to and will probably ignore our challenge.
Of course, if a side-by-side blind test reveals that there is no difference between a Kogan £4 HDMI cable and the cables Currys and John Lewis stock, we expect they will immediately cease selling these overpriced, high-margin products in their stores.
We’ve sold thousands of Kogan £4 HDMI cables around the world and have not had a single one returned for any reason - let alone lacking “durability”. What are these retailers pretending their customers are doing with their HDMI cables that makes them need £100 worth of “durability”? Do they think we’re taking the HDMI cables four wheel driving with us? You plug the cable in, it works, and you forget about it!
At Kogan we live technology, day-in day-out. We know that a HDMI cable simply transmits 1s and 0s -- there is no such thing as a better connection -- but there are millions of unsuspecting shoppers out there being scammed with their home theatre purchases from high street retailers.
If the scam on HDMI cables is being defended in the name of “consumer choice”, imagine what other scams are going on! They say they’re giving shoppers options, but all they appear to be doing is using shady sales tactics to scam hard working British consumers.
“Consumer choice” is all about giving people several options and the accurate information they require to make an informed choice. It’s not about using sales tricks to try and upsell overpriced products to loyal customers.
They say a 3D TV needs a premium HDMI cable. Rubbish! The Kogan £4 cable is compliant with the latest HDMI standards, including the ability to transmit a 3D signal, as well as ethernet over HDMI.
To Currys and John Lewis: The ball is in your court. Do right by UK shoppers - prove the difference between the cables or stop selling the expensive ones!

My 87 year old dad got ripped off in Skipton last week by a small trader selling the same line. The reality was that the cable my dad bought was esthetically nicer, it was probably a better build quality than the Tesco 5GBP equivalent but in no way was it going to deliver a better picture.
I wish the sales guy at the shop could have just have been honest enough to say, "it's a better build quality than cheaper products" rather than lying to a bloke who clearly wouldn't understand the meaning of the terms, jitter and dropped packets. We don't live in very honest times.
